History and heritage at Kingscote, Kangaroo Island
Stop and discover Kingscote enroute to the North coast, Kangaroo Island
The seaside town and service centre of Kingscote on Kangaroo Island is a great place to stock up on supplies and local produce before heading further north or west. But there is more to the island's largest town—try out the kid-friendly beaches, a tidal pool, skate park and playgrounds, or walk the coastal and historic area trails. Get some tips from the locals and fish from the jetty or just admire the sunset. Snorkellers may catch a glimpse of the leafy sea dragons found around the jetty pylons.
Discover South Australian history at Kingscote
The first official European settlement in the state was established at Reeves Point on the outskirts of the town in 1836 by the South Australia Company. Kingscote, Kangaroo Island nearly became the state capital, but it was too remote, so around six months later most of the settlement relocated to Adelaide. Find the famous Mulberry Tree, planted when the town was first established.
Admire the view from Flagstaff Hill, which celebrates the memory of the first four ships to arrive at Reeves Point, then wander through the old cemetery, or Hope Cottage Museum’s outstanding collection of items from the island's heritage.
Silo art, arts and crafts at Kingscote
Explore the many colourful and interesting artworks in public spaces throughout the town on fences, buildings and the newly-completed silos—you can’t miss the giant Kangaroo Island kangaroo and glossy black cockatoo! Sculptures, jewellery, artworks, glasswork, prints and photography from the vibrant local arts and crafts scene are showcased in the many galleries.
